What is a product tour?
Definition
A product tour is a guided, step-by-step walkthrough of a software interface; either in-app for onboarding new users, or as a standalone interactive demo for prospects.
The term covers two distinct things. In-app product tours (Appcues, Pendo, Userflow) run inside your live product via an installed SDK, guiding logged-in users through features. Standalone product tours; interactive demos; are captured copies of the product that anyone can click through without an account.
In-app tours optimise activation for users you already won. Standalone tours win the users in the first place: they live on landing pages, in launch posts, and in sales follow-ups, doing the 'show me the product' work before signup.
Why it matters
Teams frequently buy the wrong category. If your problem is 'visitors don't understand the product before signing up', you need a standalone demo tour; not an onboarding SDK. If your problem is activation after signup, you may need both.
Example
A startup embeds a standalone 5-step tour on its homepage for prospects, and separately runs an in-app checklist for new signups. Same product story, two different tools and moments.
Common questions
Do product tours require engineering work?
In-app tours do; an SDK install and ongoing selector maintenance. Standalone demo tours don't: a browser extension captures the product and a no-code editor adds the guided steps.
What makes a good product tour?
Brevity (4–8 steps), a single storyline toward one aha moment, hotspots that direct attention rather than describe everything, and an ending CTA. The best tours feel directed, like a camera guiding your eye.
