What is an interactive product demo?
Definition
An interactive product demo is a clickable, self-guided walkthrough of a software product that lets prospects experience the real interface; without signing up, installing anything, or booking a sales call.
Unlike a video, an interactive demo responds to the viewer: they click buttons, move between screens, and control the pace. Unlike a free trial, it requires no account, no setup, and no risk of getting lost; guided hotspots direct attention to what matters.
Modern interactive demos are built by capturing the product's actual interface (ideally as a DOM snapshot rather than screenshots), then layering guided steps on top: tooltips, hotspots, spotlight effects, and calls to action. The result embeds on a landing page or travels as a share link.
Why it matters
Buyers increasingly refuse to book a call just to see a product. An interactive demo answers 'what does it actually look like?' on the visitor's terms; and visitors who complete one convert at a far higher rate than passive viewers, because they've already experienced the value.
Example
A SaaS landing page embeds a 6-step demo of its analytics dashboard. A visitor clicks through connecting a data source, building a chart, and sharing a report; feeling the product in 40 seconds; then hits 'Start free' already convinced.
Common questions
What's the difference between an interactive demo and a product tour?
A product tour usually runs inside the live app for logged-in users (onboarding). An interactive demo is a captured copy of the product for prospects; no login, safe to explore, embeddable anywhere.
How is an interactive demo different from a video demo?
Video is passive and fixed-pace; an interactive demo is active and viewer-paced. Demos also stay current (re-capture in minutes vs re-shooting video) and can capture leads mid-experience.
