What is user onboarding?
Definition
User onboarding is the process of guiding new users from signup to their first moment of realised value (the 'aha moment') through tours, checklists, walkthroughs, and education.
Onboarding is where retention is won or lost: users who reach value in their first session stay; users who wander an empty dashboard churn. Classic tooling includes in-app checklists, tooltips, product tours, and lifecycle emails.
The 2026 twist is pre-signup onboarding: putting an interactive demo of the core workflow on the signup page and in welcome emails, so users arrive already knowing the path. It sidesteps the empty-state problem entirely; the demo shows the product working with realistic data before the user has entered any.
Why it matters
Every point of activation improvement compounds through retention and revenue. Onboarding is typically the highest-leverage funnel stage a SaaS team can optimise, and it's chronically underinvested.
Example
A project-management app embeds a demo of 'create a project → assign a task → hit done' in its welcome email. New users replicate what they clicked, and week-1 activation climbs.
Common questions
What's a good activation metric?
The action most correlated with retention; 'created first project', 'sent first invoice'. Define it, measure time-to-it, and point every onboarding asset (including demos) at shortening that time.
Do interactive demos replace in-app onboarding?
They complement it. Demos work pre-signup and in emails/help docs where SDKs can't reach; in-app tours guide users in the live product. The demo half needs no engineering.
